STEM/STEAM

STEM/STEAM are an integration of subjects. S=Science, T=Technology, E=Engineering (In New Zealand this falls mainly under the Technology curriculum area) Maths and in STEAM The arts is added. Integration of the subjects brings them closer to reality as the real world activities are not compartmentalised into subjects.
A lot of sites that profess to be STEM/STEAM sites are just collections of science or maths activities. Look for integration of subjects for true STEM/STEAM activities and better yet look for authenticity. Keep tasks as open-ended and inquiry-based. If there is only one possible result it's probably not STEM/STEAM.

May of these link to a structured activity. To make them truly STEAM you can take the idea and create a task/problem to solve e.g. Create the fastest vehicle to complete a circuit of a track or create a bridge that will support a particular weight. Lego is great for these but if you don't have any you could use other construction blocks that you do have.

Digital Tools & Apps

Picture
Digital Microscopes - these are great tools. Plug in via USB and use your PC camera to view (you may need to turn the camera around). Take photos of what you view.
Arduino Science Journal  - a really use
ful free app for Android and ios devices and Chromebooks (although best used on a phone or ipad). Can record ambient light (on some devices), sound, pressure, movement and much more. Observations and experiments can be easily photographed and recorded. Loads of activities to get started or create your own.

Rube Goldberg Machines
A machine that does a simple task in an unnecessarily complicated way (see the video on the right). They often encompass most, if not all STEM/STEAM subjects.
Audri's Monster Trap is an awesome example of accepting mistakes as part of the process.
